Anxiety Disorder Treatment

What is anxiety?

Experiencing anxiety from time to time is a natural aspect of life, as many individuals find themselves concerned about their health, finances, or family issues. However, anxiety disorders are more than just fleeting worries or fears. For those affected by an anxiety disorder, these feelings persist and can intensify over time. The resulting symptoms can disrupt everyday activities, including work performance, academic responsibilities, and personal relationships.

What are some signs and symptoms of anxiety?

Persistent feelings of anxiety that interfere with daily life activities differ from occasional worrying. Individuals struggling with anxiety can experience anxiety for months or even years. Below are some common symptoms of anxiety.

  • Feeling on edge

  • Inability to control feelings of excessive worry

  • Difficulty sleeping because of excessive worrying

  • Feeling fatigued

  • Feeling irritability

  • Experiencing body aches, stomach aches or general unexplained pain

What are treatment options for anxiety?

  • Therapy-there are a variety of therapy options available for treatment of anxiety, including but not limited to: cognitive behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), exposure therapy and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The type of therapy recommended by your provider should be based on the specific nature of the anxiety that you are experiencing.

  • Medications-Depending upon the severity of your anxiety, your provider may recommend medications in conjunction with therapy. Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for treatment of anxiety. Please keep in mind that it may take several weeks for the medications to start taking effect. In addition, it may take trialing medications before discovering the one that works best for your unique symptoms. Maintaining close communication with your provider is important, especially if you decide to discontinue use. It is important to avoid discontinuing your medications abruptly as you may experience symptoms of withdrawal.
